Mission
The Coalition for Healthy Ports brings together environmental and environmental justice groups, labor unions, faith leaders, truck drivers, and community advocates, with particular focus on port-adjacent communities that have carried the cost of goods movement for too long.

The coalition forms
A bi-state alliance comes together. No single organization, neighborhood or sector could move the Port Authority alone.
2011
Pre-1994 truck ban at the port
Years of advocacy push the Port Authority to remove the dirtiest diesel rigs.
2013
Bayonne Bridge litigation
CHP becomes a named plaintiff in federal court, combining organizing, press, policy and legal action.
2015–16
“Employ Us — Don't Poison Us”
With Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and the Teamsters, linking environmental and economic justice in one demand.
2016
Newark EJ & Cumulative Impacts Ordinance — first in the nation
Drafted by NJEJA and allies, with CHP organizing in support.
2020
NJ Environmental Justice Law (S232) — first in the nation
The country’s first state environmental justice statute requiring mandatory permit denials for disproportionate cumulative impacts.
2021
NJ Advanced Clean Trucks rule — first on the East Coast
Requiring manufacturers to increase zero-emission truck sales.

Defending the ACT rule
CHP mobilized to head off a delay vote. The fight to defend and fully implement the rule continues.
