Healthy Ports, for Everyone They Touch
The Port of New York and New Jersey is the largest port complex on the East Coast, and the communities closest to it have carried the public health costs for decades: some of the highest childhood asthma rates in the country, premature deaths from diesel exposure, workers earning poverty wages.
Since 2007 we’ve organized for clean air, zero emissions, worker protections, and economic and environmental justice.

Permit Denials for Cumulative Pollution
New Jersey became the first state in the nation to require permit denials for cumulative pollution impacts.
Advanced Clean Trucks Rule
New Jersey became the first state on the East Coast to adopt the Advanced Clean Trucks rule.
Environmental Justice Ordinance
Newark became the first city with an Environmental Justice & Cumulative Impacts Ordinance.
Standing With Our Communities
Newark’s Ironbound and South Ward, Elizabeth, Bayonne, Staten Island, and Jersey City carry some of the highest concentrations of port-related air pollution in the country. The result is asthma rates among the highest in the United States, elevated cancer risk, and premature deaths that should never have happened.
Healthy Ports, not just clean ports, not just green ports, because a port serving the public good has to be healthy for the workers inside it, the residents around it, the air above it, and the regional economy depending on it.
